We call it our Goldilocks choice because not only does it come with just the right amount of features and air cleansing capacity for just under $165, but it’s a great choice for most homeowners with moderately sized rooms who prefer an air purifier that comes with a little more than basic settings.
This doesn’t mean it’s perfect, but it does deliver more than other air purifiers that come with a higher price tag. Let’s take an in-depth look at the pros (and downsides) of this air purifier to help you determine if it’s right for you.
Is Hathaspace an American Company: the Mysterious Fish in a Big Purification Pond
First, there is one major downside to Hathaspace to be aware of: there’s very little information about the company and its history online.
On Amazon, they call themselves a “trusted American brand” while other resources claim the business is based in China. Their website reveals no information about when they were founded, and the only contact information available is a customer service phone number and email address.
Having said that, a company representative responded professionally to nearly every Amazon customer review that was less than five stars, thanking reviewers for their feedback and suggestions to improve the product (such as a request for a change filter indicator light.)
What we do know about Hathaspace is that they also make dehumidifiers and aroma diffusers (that also have a high level of satisfied customer reviews.)
They only offer two air purifier products at this time: the Smart True HEPA Air Purifier HSP001, and the Smart True HEPA Air Purifier 2.0 with Medical Grade H13 HEPA, which covers a larger room area.
We do know that their air purifiers are made in China. While some may view this as a strike against the company, a positive spin on this is that this country knows all too well about poor air quality and the importance of having a good air purifier on hand.
Despite the mystery surrounding the Hathaspace brand, we still believe the overwhelmingly positive reviews speak for themselves and make up for the lack of transparency.
The Hathaspace’s Innovative 5 Stage Filtration System Removes Just About Everything
One way in which the Hathaspace Smart True HEPA Air Purifier HSP001 has a leg up on its competitors is that it uses a 5-in-1 filtration system to cleanse your home’s air, as opposed to the traditional 4-in-1 or 3-in-1 methods that competing products use.
This system filters 99.97% of airborne pollutants using the following components:
- Nano Cold Catalyst Filter – It sounds like a fancy name, but this is really just the same type of filter commonly found in other air purifier HEPA filters. It traps larger particles floating in indoor air such as dust particles and pet dander.
The Hathaspace website claims this layer will capture toxic household chemicals including formaldehyde, ammonia, and benzene. We’re a little dubious that the first line of defense in the filter system can do that, because usually it’s an air purifier’s carbon filter that can remove these chemicals from the air.
- Cellular Activated Carbon Filter – This is an activated carbon filter designed to absorb and remove anything that gives off a smell such as smoke, gases, and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) found in household products.
- Antibacterial Filter – Here is where Hathaspace goes a step further than other air purifiers; they include an antibacterial filter composed of nano-materials that eliminate and destroy bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
- HEPA Filter – This is the accordion-like filter that removes 99.97% of airborne pollutants in the air as small as 0.3 microns. This includes dust mites, allergens, pollen, mold spores, bacteria, and viruses.
- Ionizer – Hathaspace includes an ionizer that releases negative ions (anions) that attach to positively charged air pollutant particles, neutralizing them for good. Ionizers carry a bit of controversy with them as they’re believed to trigger certain medical conditions such as asthma. If ionization is a concern to you, you can switch the ionizer on or off on the Hathaspace Smart True HEPA Air Purifier HSP001.
The product is also CARB (California Air Resources Board) certified, meaning it was tested for electrical safety and ozone emissions, and meets an ozone emission concentration limit of 0.050 parts per million.
What’s the Air Purfier’s Coverage Area?
One thing we noticed when compiling our research of air purifiers is that manufacturers often fudge the stated coverage area. Unfortunately, Hathaspace is no exception.
An air purifier needs to be powerful enough to change the air at least once in the room it’s placed in to be effective. Hathaspace claims the HSP001 is suitable for rooms up to 350 square feet, and will change the air twice per hour while on the highest setting in a room that size.
That would be impressive if it weren’t for the fact that the product’s stated CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) is 160. The CADR rating measures how many cubic feet of air an air purifier can effectively remove particles from each minute.
In order to calculate the maximum room size an air purifier can be used in based on its CADR rating, you simply multiply it by 1.55. In this case, 160 x 1.55 = 248. That means it can be used in rooms up to 248 square feet in size to be effective.
The good news is that if your home has averaged sized rooms, this air purifier should get the job done throughout your living spaces. It will filter air in a master bedroom that is 14 x 16’ (224 square feet) or a 12 x 18’ living room (216 square feet) as well as most kitchens, home offices, bathrooms, and kids’ rooms.
Some reviewers also stated the machine had no problem cleaning rooms larger than the 350 square feet limit listed on the website.
Easy to Move with a Compact Futuristic Design
Out of the box, the HSP001 is a lightweight (12 pounds) and fairly compact design, measuring 13.5 x 7 x 19.5 inches. This makes it easy to move and place throughout a home.
Filtered air is dispensed from the top of the unit which means you don’t have to tolerate air blowing directly in your face if you place it upon a desk, table, or countertop.
The air purifier itself has a bit more sleek and modern looking dressed in black and white compared to other models we’ve seen that tend to be boxy and industrial looking. The Hathaspace is less likely to stand out like a sore thumb in a room when you have company over.
Hathaspace HSP001 Stand-Out Features: More Convenience for Less Money
The Hathaspace HSP001 is proof that you don’t have to spend a fortune on an air purifier to get convenient features.
For a start, it comes with a remote control. That may not seem like a big deal to most people, but it’s actually a rare accessory among the other air purifiers we looked at, especially in the same price range. No more physically stepping away from your Netflix bingefest or getting out of your warm and comfy bed to adjust or shut off an air purifier.
Here’s a look at the HSP001’s other stand-out features:
- Air Quality Indicator—the unit continuously checks your air and displays the air quality level on the front panel with a light that turns green (best air quality), yellow (medium quality) or red (poor quality.)
- Fully Automatic Mode—in auto mode, the purifier will adjust the fan speed on its own to keep up with the air quality so you don’t have to.
- Timer—set the purifier to run in hour-long intervals anywhere from one to 12 continuous hours.
- Four Fan Speeds—the purifier has three fan speeds (low, medium, and high) plus a whisper-quiet sleep mode for undisturbed sleep.
- Shut Off Light Mode—in Sleep mode, users have the option of turning off the panel lights completely to avoid distracting illumination. This is a newer feature that was added after customer feedback on an earlier version of the unit requested it.
Speaking of Sleep, How Quiet is the Purifier?
This is another area where this air purifier shines compared to others: it only produces 20 decibels of noise while in Sleep mode, which means you can barely hear it at all. Its gentle noise level is cited again and again in reviews, while competing products clock in at around 24 or 25 decibels on their lowest setting.
And while running the fan on the highest speed, it produces 47 decibels which is far from distracting. So if you wish to use this in a baby’s room or if you need a super quiet bedroom, this purifier is a great choice.
How Often Do the Filters Need to be Replaced?
One standard feature missing from this air purifier is a change filter indicator. Hathaway recommends changing the filter every four to six months.
When asked by customers about adding the feature to future versions of the product, a company representative said it would just function as a timer to indicate when six months’ of usage is up.
However, this isn’t how competing air purifiers use the indicator – it’s meant to go off when the HEPA filter becomes extremely dirty, as not every customer will run a purifier for the same amount of time over a six month period.
Going by Hathaspace’s logic, perhaps it’s best this feature is missing. Replacement filters cost $34.99 which is more affordable than competing brands. Hathaspace also has a filter subscription service to help its customers save money on replacement filters.
Because the filtration system is made up of several layers, you do need to take care to insert each part of the filter in the correct order into the unit or it will not function properly. The filter is easy to replace and easily accessible through the front panel of the purifier.
What are the Downsides?
Like most home products, the Hathaspace Smart True Air Purifier does have some minor disadvantages.
For a machine that is so quiet that it can be placed in a baby’s room, we would love to see a child lock feature so that kids can’t play around with the buttons (which are within temptation on the front of the unit) and disrupt the performance. A change filter indicator light—based on how saturated the HEPA filter is, not a period of time—would also be a nice touch.
It would also be nice if the air purifier’s CADR rating also matched up with the stated room coverage. The company does make a second air purifier that they claim is capable of cleaning the air in larger rooms.
This product is also not Energy Star certified, although it uses such low wattage (40 watts) that really isn’t a concern. Its low power consumption is definitely another plus.
These are all minor complaints, and certainly not enough to outweigh the pros of this model.

What Customers Are Saying
There are over 2,000 reviews for the Hathaspace on Amazon, and a whopping 91% of them give the product four or five stars (9 and 82 percent, respectively.) So the chances are 9 out of 10 that you’re going to fall in love with this air purifier, too.
Top rated features include:
- Easy to use
- Sleep mode
- Noise level
- Value for money

- Durability
Customers who want extra assurance from breathing ionized air also appreciate that the product’s UV light and ionizer can be switched off. And the company’s highly responsive customer service got several mentions. One customer said that out of the four air purifiers they have owned, that the Hathaspace “is by far the best of all.”
The Hathaspace Smart True HEPA Air Purifier HSP001 is Just Right for Most Consumers
The Hathaspace Smart True HEPA Air Purifier HSP001 demonstrates that you don’t need to drop a lot of money on an established air purifier brand to enjoy healthy air in your home, nor do you have to sacrifice convenience.
This purifier is a great choice if you have small-to-medium sized rooms throughout your home and need a machine that won’t disrupt your or your family’s sleep and that is light enough to pick up and move from room to room.
We also appreciate that the replacement filters won’t break the bank for this product, when other comparable air purifiers want double the cost for their filters. This combined with the low energy consumption makes this air purifier well worth its price.
If Goldilocks is your spirit animal, and you’re seeking an air purifier that is just right for your needs, you may not have to look further than the Hathaspace Smart True HEPA Air Purifier HSP001. In this case, no big brand name recognition is no problem here.
